Fun Facts
I'm from southern Appalachia, and I love camping, hiking, and backpacking. I get outside as often as possible, and I love trying new sports. I've played soccer for my whole life, but I recently joined the rugby team here at school. Additionally, I love snowboarding, wake boarding, and rock climbing. I love being silly with my friends and making people laugh.
About Me
I'm a math major at Texas Christian University on the Pre-health track. I am a member of the honor's college here at TCU and I am a Chancellor's Scholar. After I graduate I hope to attend medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill. As a doctor I want to work with elders who have Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. I am also interested in working with children with disabilities.
In my junior and senior years of high school, I was given the opportunity to tutor in the math lab at the community college in my city. I worked there during the school year and during the summer for just under two years. This job allowed me to tutor all levels of math and chemistry to students of all ages (I once tutored a woman who was over sixty!!) In addition to this tutoring experience, I have also taught several one on one classes with home schooled students looking to test in to certain classes at the college.
When I was in middle school I hated math. I didn't understand it, and my teachers couldn't explain it to me in a way that made sense. Once I got to high school, however, I had a teacher who took a special interest in me and taught math to me in a way that made sense to ME--not just how the book taught it. It was this teacher who sparked my passion for math. When I tutor, I strive to emulate her. My goal in tutoring is not just to teach students the skills they need to know in order to pass a test, but to give them confidence as mathematicians. I often hear people say, "I'm just not a math person," as an excuse. My goal is to bust this myth and give students confidence in math and in applying the tools they take away from their classes to problems that occur in their lives.
