Fun Facts

I took piano lessons for several years as a child and again in college and have recently started up again. I am currently working on Beethoven's Fur Elise and hope to tackle his Moonlight Sonata soon. I love science fiction and comic books and superheroes and going to the movies. I have three brothers and two nieces. II moved to France to teach English and will be teaching at the University of Montpellier in the Fall!

About Me

I am an alumna of the National Cathedral School for Girls, the College of William and Mary, and have a Masters in Education from the maryland">University of Maryland. I taught fourth grade at a Montgomery County Public School and currently teach English as a Second Language at a local language school. I also work as an ESL tutor for several families in the area. I am proficient in French and want to learn Japanese!

Experience

I have been working with kids full-time for nearly eight years, in part as a third and fourth grade teacher in Montgomery County, but primarily as a single-care provider. I have extensive experience with children from infancy to age twelve, helping with reading comprehension and strategies, writing skills, as well as basic fundamental math. I have assisted with study skills and homework, and helped students learn the foundational tools they need in order to excel

Approach

I believe in the importance of fundamentals (reading, writing, and arithmetic!) and hard work, and also in making content accessible and fun to all learners. (My interest in comics stems from my desire to make math problems exciting for my students.) It is as important for me to teach content as it is to teach the skills and strategies students need in order to decipher the content itself. Students need to learn how to ask questions as much as they need to find answers.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring


As a fourth grade teacher, I had to prepare students for standardized tests by teaching them test-taking strategies. Most of these strategies are applicable on standardized tests of all levels. I received a perfect score on the verbal portion of the SAT and understand both the reading comprehension and vocabulary requirements of the test, and how to help students understand and meet those requirements. ESL Tutoring


As a fourth grade teacher in the Montgomery County Public School system, I taught many ESOL students in all subjects and also planned lessons and worked closely with the grade-level ESL instructor. I am also certified to teach ESL in the state of Maryland, having received my certification in earlier in 2017.

Elementary Math Tutoring


As a fourth grade teacher in the Montgomery County public school system in Maryland, I implemented the state’s version of the Common Core curriculum to a variety of students at differing ability levels. I worked with high-needs students who needed to be brought up to grade level before they could even be taught fourth grade content, and high-performing students who needed to be pushed and appropriately challenged. As a nanny and private tutor, I’ve worked with students of varying ability levels from the first to sixth grade who attend DC and Virginia private schools, including Montessori schools, and use a completely different curriculum.

PARCC Tutoring


As a former teacher in the Montgomery County School system in Maryland, it was my job to prepare students for the PARCC test, both in content mastery and the logistics of the test itself. I worked with students in both the Language Arts and the Math portions of the PARCC, as well as computer test-taking strategies and skills. I worked with students of varying ability levels on how to comprehend standardized test questions and how to find the best answer out of a given set of answers.
