Fun Facts

I think I have traveled to more foreign than US states. In addition to travelling, I love to read and spend time with my two cats. I have a daughter who recently graduated from the University of Virginia and lives and works in New York City. While I think NYC is a nice place to visit, I wouldn't want to live there and prefer the Washington D.C. metro area.

About Me

I majored in Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. I worked for ten years for two different payroll accounting firms. However, I changed career paths in 2006 when I went started tutoring. I have tutored a range of ages from elementary school to high school juniors. I have also tutored small groups of students, but I prefer individual tutoring.

Experience

As I mentioned above, I started tutoring in 2006 for Fairfax County Public Schools
in Fairfax, Va. I worked with small groups of mostly middle school age students in the AVID program, which is a program geared toward students who would be the first in their families to attend college. It stands for advancement by individual determination. In 2013 I started working as a private tutor through Wyzant, nextdoor, and Care.com.

Approach

I like to let the student take the lead. However, if he or she cannot or appears to be heading in the wrong direction, I will start to ask specific questions, such as "do you have homework or upcoming quizzes or tests?" With math, in particular, I try to lead in such a way that the student ends up solving the problem on his or her own!
