Fun Facts

I'm a complete book worm and an encyclopedia of factoids. I'm often found in a nest of blankets snuggled up with my dog reading a classic favorite or a narrative fiction piece. Ask me for book and short story recommendations!

About Me

I'm a senior at maryland">University of Maryland College Park as an English major. I'm planning on graduating in the summer of 2018 and jumping straight into education because of my 6 years of tutoring experience plus I like working with kids. I'm at a bit of a split decision about studying law, but for now, education seems like the best path for me. I've won the research poster section for my school this year and am certified with TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language).

Experience

I have been a private tutor for six years now. I started when I was in high school as a recommendation from a counselor. I had three students in the beginning and through my diligence and hard work, I've learned to maintain at least seven students per week and have a total of 15 students. I've also been asked to teach at VBS (Vacation Bible Study) at a couple churches. It was a new and exciting experience where I learned the difference between one-on-one teaching and classroom teaching.

Approach

As an upcoming teacher, I've learned that teaching a classroom is drastically different to teaching one-on-one. As a teacher, I would aim for the best middle ground where some students will find the class less stimulating while others find it difficult. When I'm in a one-on-one situation, I'm able to give my attention to one student, so having the students talk a lot helps with memorization and understanding. I tend to have more "discussion" classes than lecturing or writing classes.

AP English Tutoring

I've taught everything from "The Great Gatsby" to "To Kill a Mockingbird". I've been known to have a more discussion focused session where I make sure that the student comes into his/her own understanding of the material. I've also worked as an editor and translator of many documents and can easily review essays and any writing homework the student may bring to me.

Writing Advance Tutoring

In high school and in college, I've taken writing composition and it was a very stimulating class. It pushed my ability to think about writing in a completely new way. Since taking both of those classes, I've been inspired to help my students write in a non-confined writing style like the 5 paragraph structure that they teach in high school. In the work world, no one will actually use that type of style unless it is a short report they have to send in. Many students learn the guideline for the 5 paragraph style and stick with it. I want to expand my student's horizons to unique styles of formal writing that'll make their paper stand out to the eyes of authority figures that are reading their work.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

This is my area of expertise. I've help many 8th graders with their first reading research papers and have helped expand many student's vocabulary. Through my years of experience, I've learned that students learn best when they write things out by hand. This theory is actually supported by psychological research where the students who wrote their notes down were able to remember more than the students who typed out their notes. Reading comprehension is a subject that has many parts to it and vocabulary is just one of them. Most students read the whole book or story hoping that they'll just understand it, but in a dense play like Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, the chunking method works best.

Study Skills Tutoring

The best way to help a student learn to study is to make it a habit. This does not mean that the student needs to study for an hour or even two a day.

Homework Coach Tutoring

I've been a peer mentor in high school and because of that, I learned to be very patient. Also, I am continually tutoring children at the elementary level so I am very familiar with students' homeworks.
