Fun Facts
I've always considered myself the eternal student. I always want to learn something new, whether it be just researching it online or getting to take a class. This year I've decided to focus on improving my language skills and have been working to improve my spoken Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean.
About Me
I've recently moved back to Fresno and have just finished schooling for my license in Aircraft Maintenance. I'm currently studying for my licensing exams (there are five) and trying to apply my new mechanical skills wherever I can. While not studying I work as a tutor for elementary, middle school, and junior high students teaching and assisting with essay writing, grammar, and reading comprehension for English literature. I am now happy to enjoy both worlds of teaching and mechanics!
Experience
I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics and a minor in Japanese and Chinese from Fresno State in 2007 , and quickly headed overseas to Taiwan where I worked as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) instructor and tutor until 2014. I worked with a variety of students from very young children to business professionals on whatever English topic or skill they needed help in. In the US, I've had the chance to work again with students and would love to do so at Frog Tutoring as well
Approach
Most importantly for me, is that I understand what my students want and need. Then I try to tailor each class for what will not only help that student the most, but will also encourage the student by showing the accomplishments they are making. It is important for students to feel comfortable asking me questions, and if they don't understand, I'm happy to explain a concept (i.e. English grammar, essay structure, etc.) in a different way. Not everyone learns the same, and that's perfectly fine!

Linguistics: TESOL
Chinese Tutoring
In university, I studied Mandarin and traditional characters for three years before going abroad as a language exchange student to Taiwan. After graduation, I moved to Taiwan and would practice Mandarin for the following eight years. I currently try to practice my Mandarin as often as possible.
English Tutoring
Although my specialty is English as a Second Language, I worked as a writing tutor in university and often helped students with essays and reading comprehension assignments. I've also taught advanced English writing for international students.
ESL Tutoring
My Bachelor's Degree was concentrated on teaching ESL/EFL and after graduating I spent ten years teaching ESL and EFL to students. I'm also comfortable with all four core skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Graduate Level Writing Tutoring
While in graduate school, I often tutored incoming international students in graduate level writing and attended university writing seminars on how to improve graduate level writing, specifically with MLA, APA, and a few formats specific to the Linguistics Department.
Writing Tutoring
I started as a writing tutor at university back in 2003 and over the years I have added skills for timed test writing and undergraduate and graduate level writing. I also do creative writing in my spare time, making sure that my grammar knowledge is also up to date for both academic and creative writing.
SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring
In Taiwan, I tutored a student at the American high school on writing and grammar points for the SAT, along with an international student who wanted to study at a US high school. A lot of those writing strategies also transfer over to the GRE as well as the TOEFL.
Study Skills Tutoring
In high school, I was part of the AVID program which taught study skills that I would go on to implement in my university career and eventually teach to my EFL/ESL students as well.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
I would often work with younger children in ESL on breaking down sentences, paragraphs, and essays in order to understand how to find the topic, the main point, etc. A lot of times reading comprehension practice was one of the best ways to practice vocabulary and introduce children to English essay structure that they would use in later school years..
GRE Tutoring
I taught GRE prep to incoming international students who wanted to attend graduate school in the US. I focused only on the Verbal Reasoning and Analytical writing sections of the GRE.
IELTS Tutoring
In Taiwan, I would often work with students on IELTS prep, focusing mainly on writing and speaking. Oftentimes students would be taking both the IELTS and TOEFL and our class would cover skills that would help for both types of tests.
TOEFL Tutoring
I have taught TOEFL: iBT prep for the last ten years overseas and in the US, but in the last three years I have also had a chance to become familiar with and teach TOEFL: PBT as well and am comfortable teaching prep for either test. I have a little experience with teaching TOEFL Junior test prep as well.
Conversational Mandarin Tutoring
I studied Mandarin for three years in the US, one year as a language exchange student at National Taiwan University, and practiced with a tutor during my eight-year stay in Taiwan. I speak at an advanced level.
