Experienced Writer & Spanish Speaker

Fun Facts

Starting from a relatively young age, I developed a love for writing, particularly poetry. I spend way too much time basking in the sun when I can, I played soccer for the majority of my life and volleyball and ice hockey for a portion of it, yoga is my favorite way to destress, and painting is my outlet for words otherwise not expressed. I hope to soon learn how to play the guitar and surf.

About Me

I am a freshman at San Diego State University who is currently pursuing a major in Comparative International Studies and a minor in Spanish. I was born in Washington, lived in Wisconsin for 10 years, lived in Hong Kong for 4 months, and spent 4 high school years in Barcelona, Spain. My career goals include becoming a counselor for victims of domestic violence or immigrants (particularly those arriving from Spanish-speaking countries), write articles for an online newspaper, and work for an NGO.

Experience

Although only a freshman, I feel as though I have had a lot of experience in the field of writing. I took a very intensive Literature High Level class while pursuing the International Baccalaureate Program in Barcelona that helped shaped who I am as a creative and academic writer. I currently am a content creator (writer) for the Odyssey at SDSU. As for my experience with Spanish, I learned the language during my 4 years in Spain and still occasionally Spanish read books or watch tv shows.

Approach

If I were to get the position of a writing tutor, I would like the student to always bring two printed copies of a draft they are working on--one for me to add minor comments to and the other for them to read aloud and hopefully catch many of the mistakes themselves. For Spanish, I aim to speak only in Spanish with the student to get them more used to hearing the language. I would let them tell me what they are particularly struggling with, and then cater to those needs accordingly.

Literature Tutoring

I scored a 6 on my IB Literature HL exam and learned a lot about academic writing criteria through the course of the class. I currently write for the Odyssey at SDSU. Additionally, I have been writing poetry for a while now and love annotating vast ranges of literature. I feel as though I would be a good fit for a student who struggles to find their voice and obtain a high level of grammatical accuracy in their academic writing.

Spanish I Tutoring

I lived in Barcelona Spain for 4 years, and thus learned the Spanish language. I feel as though I would be a good tutor because I speak the language well enough that I would be able to speak to students in Spanish but still clear up any major misconceptions in English. I have friends from Spain that I still keep in touch with that only speak Spanish so I know certain phrases that are not taught in typical Spanish classes in the United States.
