Fun Facts
In my spare time, I attend concerts and play theremin: an electronic instrument that you play without touching. I enjoy studying film, thrift shopping, and practicing calligraphy.
About Me
I'm a student at Seattle Central College, finishing up my AA degree by the spring to transfer to WWU. On weekends I often attend meetings for the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Project to work on funding services for YYA facing homelessness and housing instability in King County. My main goal is to be a high school math teacher, and I hope to major in sociology and minor in mathematics before applying to the secondary education program.
Experience
I was a mathlete for 5 years between middle and high school, and I was always placed on the A team during competitions. I won my high school's AMC 10 (American Math Competition), which was an individual competition. I also made it to the regional spelling bee. In school my peers would always come to me for math help, even in the form of late-night text messages. Throughout college I sat in the back of the math classroom to walk struggling students through exercises.
Approach
I was lucky enough to go through mathematics without any issues, but I was always confused by how many people said that they hated it or that they were bad at it. Math is one of the easiest subjects to learn, because it's one of the few subjects that's very black and white. I believe that math is like a ladder, and that no one rung is any harder to climb than the former. When students have an engaging, passionate instructor, they're able to focus and find the motivation to keep climbing.
