Fun Facts
I love to read! I read to myself and I read to others. I have even been known to read sitting in my parked car so I can finish a good part. I enjoy travel, outside activities, and music/singing. I recently purchased a house and am diligently working to improve it.
About Me
I am a retired education/new-mexico/rio-rancho">special education teacher who just can't stop working. I very much enjoy the flexibility of drawing a paycheck from my pension and working where and when I feel like it. I still love teaching and plan to continue working both in and out of education for at least 10-15 more years so I can afford to travel and keep myself busy and active.
Experience
As a teacher, I worked for 26 years with elementary special ed with students with mild to severe disabilities such as autism, dyslexia, cerebral palsy, and others. In the years since I retired from teaching, I have kept busy tutoring and giving respite care to individuals with developmental disabilities. This is highly rewarding for me and I have developed some lifelong friends in my clients and their families.
Approach
Every child can learn. It is my job to find out what works for them. I approach it as a game of getting to know them and what makes them happy and successful. If we are having fun, it does not mean we aren't learning. I bring all of me to tutoring and I think about my pupils all the time and try to come up with activities that will help them learn. It is what I have always loved about teaching. I am always learning and growing.

MastersHomework Coach Tutoring
I am qualified to be a homework coach for elementary school students because I have taught elementary school for 26 years. I assigned homework for kindergarten through 3rd grade but am familiar with assignments that are typically given in fourth and fifth grades. In addition, I have helped students with homework after school for my own students as well as others.
Math Tutoring
During my masters degree program I took classes that covered concepts of beginning addition and number sense through fractions, decimals and algebra. I have experience teaching elementary students in grades K-3rd and am particularly good at helping with understanding numbers, adding, subtracting, and using multiplication in the real world. Although I have the ability to work with middle and high school aged students I want to stay with elementary school level at this time.
Elementary Math Tutoring
During my bachelors degree program I had a math class specifically for teaching elementary math. Several of my classmates were having a hard time with one of the concepts so during lunch one day I tutored them using the salad I had for lunch. Not only was that helpful for them but I used similar techniques throughout my teaching career within my classroom (including during lunch.)
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
I have found that the best way to understand what you are reading is to make a connection with your own life. This can be accomplished in any number of ways but I like to begin with learning about the student's interests and matching that to literature at their reading level. I help them discover that connection with leading questions before, during, and after reading a text.
Writing Tutoring
Writing is a complex subject that includes grammar, sentence structure, self expression, spelling, paragraph development and other concepts. When teaching students to write I like to begin with drawing a picture to help bypass the mechanics that can cause difficulty with self expression. In addition to teaching writing in the classroom I have worked with other teachers to develop an assessment rubric for beginning writers that was used throughout the special education classes at that school.
