About Me

I am a recent graduate from Texas Southern University's College of Education. I served as Miss College of Education and the Vice President of the pre-service teacher organization on campus. I hope to attend the University of Texas to earn my Masters degree, and then University of Pennsylvania for my Doctorate.

Experience

I have worked as a tutor for ten years, working with children ranging from preschool through undergraduate levels. I've worked as a full-time tutor for a public school district in the area. However, the 2018-19 school year will be my first year as the classroom teacher of record. I'll be teaching math and science!

Approach

I believe that learning is a student-centered process that must include multi-dimensional methods. Every student is different, so learning should be tailored to each indivivual's specific learning styles and needs. Patience and consistency partnered with hands-on methods have proven effective in my experiences as a tutor.

College Algebra Tutoring

I worked as a full-time Algebra 1 tutor for a public school district in the Houston area. I have successfully completed advanced college math courses with grades B or better in each, and I am certified to teach math in the state of Texas.

Education Tutoring

I have graduated from an Educator Preparation Program. While enrolled in this program, I served as a mentor for other students within the college of education, and maintained A's in every education course I enrolled in. Lastly, I have taken and passed the state Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities exam.

I maintained B's or better in all English and writing courses I completed. I was a proofreader and tutor within the College of Education at my university, and a recent essay of mine was selected to be the district example for the Human Resource teacher selection process.

Study skills are one thing that are not traditionally taught in the K-12 classroom. In fact, I did not learn how to study until I was admitted to an educator preparation program. My pedagogical courses taught me not only how students learn, but also how to teach students to retain information.

The district that I work in is predominantly Hispanic. Thus, every teacher, whether it's a part of their title or not, is an ESL teacher. The educator prep program I completed trained us specifically for ESL students.

STAAR Prep Tutoring

I am a current teacher, so I understand the woes of the STAAR tests. Through data analysis and rigorous sessions (over 90 minutes per week), 100 percent of my students passed the 2018 STAAR Math test, and 87 percent passed the STAAR Reading. Those who did not pass showed significant improvement.
