Fun Facts
I have done just about everything I set out to do. For example, I worked as a veterinary assistant in large animal medicine and also worked as a keeper/educator at the zoo. Recently I have been learning how to fly drones and use them to gather scientific data. I also use them to spy on my bee hives. =)
About Me
I am a retired middle school science teacher from Pike Township and North Putnam Community Schools.. I plan to stay involved in education with tutoring and volunteer organizations such as Riverwatch and GLOBE.
Experience
I was a non-traditional college student, returning to finish my degree after my children entered elementary school. Maturity in age and attitude was a benefit because I not only found myself an informal tutor, but I learned how to approach difficult subjects systematically and essentially tutor myself. It paid off, and I use my personal experience to encourage other students. As a middle school science teacher, I would participate in after-school tutoring as well as coach Academic teams.
Approach
I was a struggling student until I reached high school where I ran into a series of encouraging and inspiring teachers. I believe anyone can learn if he/she is willing to try. I am a persistent tutor and will offer as many ways as it takes for a student to understand.

English Tutoring
I have always been proficient in grammar and writing from grade school through college. I earned high scores on the National Teacher's Exam in writing and essay writing. I continued to use my writing skills in all my jobs. I consider myself a good homework and test prep coach for English.
Homework Coach Tutoring
As a teacher, I would frequently sign up for after-school tutoring. I am able to break down the parts of problems or directions and coach students through their lessons. Sometimes, I had to teach myself on the fly which in itself was valuable to students as they saw me approach the problem piece by piece.
Middle School Math Tutoring
As a grade school student, I often struggled with Math. My victories started in 8th grade when I got mad enough and determined enough to push myself to understand. That approach saw me through college.
Pre Algebra Tutoring
As a grade school student, I often struggled with Math. My victories started in 8th grade when I got mad enough and determined enough to push myself to understand. That approach saw me through college. Algebra came more easily to me. I am most comfortable coaching pre-Algebra because that is the topic that I focused on the most as an after-school tutor.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
I was and am an avid reader. With dense pieces of writing, I will work hard to understand the topic, especially in non-fiction writing such as Science journals. I found that I am good at pointing out context clues to students to help them understand their reading.
Science Tutoring
I learned to love Science in high school. I had a teacher who would allow me to use her microscopes after school, and with that, the freedom to explore, I became something of an expert on protists and bacteria. As I transitioned from high school to college I became enamored with Agriculture and the Science behind it. That set me on a path to pursue science in college and then to pursue a teaching degree so I could convey what I loved and found fascinating to others.
I have a well-rounded background in Science courses taken in tech college and Cornell University. I taught myself Physics for my first teaching job.
Math Tutoring
I signed up for afternoon tutoring during my years as a Middle School teacher. I am confident that I have sufficient background to tutor in elementary level math. I coach children to understand what is being asked of them and take the problem apart to solve it piece by piece. I am also good at fact mastery techniques.
Social Studies Tutoring
I love Social Studies almost as much as I love Science. I am well traveled and learned to appreciate differences in geography and how that affects culture and economy. I follow the news and research different parts of the world and past history in order to better what's going on today.
Microsoft Excel Tutoring
I was trained on Microsoft Office during the years I worked at the Indianapolis Zoo. I consider myself proficient in Excel. I am able to coach others in learning how to use this valuable tool in their studies and see it as a tool to carry into future jobs.
Microsoft PowerPoint Tutoring
Microsoft PowerPoint has been invaluable as a teacher presentation tool. I was trained in PowerPoint during my first year of teaching. I continue to use Powerpoint in an informal education setting, to help others understand how to monitor water quality or to perform beekeeping tasks. I am alos proficient in using the parallel Google programs such as Sheets and Slides and Docs.
