Fun Facts

I am in the Los Angeles area to pursue a screenwriting career. I have lived overseas a couple times, in Ireland, Italy and Portugal, which has helped me understand the specific pleasures of the English language.

About Me

I am a professional tutor with over five years of experience. I have tutored everyone from third graders to graduate students, from ESL students to creative writing MFA candidates. The goal is to increase the understanding of written language so that the student will be better prepared to move forward on their own.

Experience

As a writing tutor at St. Joseph's College, I had the opportunity to work with students from a vast array of backgrounds. As an adjunct professor, I got to work with engineering students and impart to them the power of the English language. As a private tutor, I worked with younger students to help instill at an early age, the magic that writing can bring about.

Approach

I consider myself something like a mechanic, helping the student understand all facets of the engine that is the English language. By getting to know each part, and how they interact with each other, the student will have a better sense of what the language is capable of. Once the understanding of the engine is improved, they can then strengthen their skill.

English Tutoring

I have tutored students in English for five years, covering everything from reading comprehension to building an essay. My experience in the English language comes from both undergrad, where I majored in Literature, to my graduate school work, where I majored in Creative Writing.

Graduate Level Writing Tutoring

As a tutor at St. Joseph's College, I worked with many graduate students to improve their writing. This included conducting in-class, hour-long tutoring sessions to graduate level classes. We focused on grammar, writing style, and how to build both a paragraph and an essay.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Part of being a tutor and an adjunct professor is going to the root of the writing process: the reading that gives the students material for their essays. I work with each student to ensure that they are pulling as much as they can from these materials, ensuring that they are building a strong base on which to start.

Study Skills Tutoring

Much like reading comprehension, study skills start with understanding the materials in front of you. By creating a natural process for the student, I can help them learn more and build a structure for the information that they are studying.

Writing Tutoring

My experience in tutoring and teaching allows me to quickly assess the blind spots and weaknesses within a student's writing. This will help me construct a plan of attack, not only boosting their belief in themselves but also giving them the tools needed to improve the places where they are lacking.

Writing Advance Tutoring

As a 'mechanic,' I can help a student learn the basics of the engine that is the English language, ensuring that they start to understand the deeper connections each facet of the engine. With advanced writing, we will work more on the fine tuning of the engine. We can then get the engine running at its highest speed.

AP English Tutoring

Thanks to the work put in as a graduate student, I can help your student understand the writing at a deeper level. The key is having them see the writing through the eyes of the writer: the decisions he or she has made when they wrote it, the key symbols that play throughout the piece, the purpose of the writing itself. Conversation is helpful here, as it helps the student construct the argument they wish to make.

Homework Coach Tutoring

As a tutor, I have seen how the brain functions, as well as what it needs to keep itself on the path towards success. A good homework coach will assess the student's strengths and weaknesses, and put forward a plan of attack to bolster the former and work on the latter.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

The SAT follows the same structure every year, which is helpful for the tutor and student alike. By examining the way the test is built, and explaining what the grader is looking for within their writing, the student will then be better prepared for the test. The key is building up their confidence through acquaintance with the materials.
