Fun Facts
I am a total book and grammar nerd. I love young adult fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, writer's manuals, reference books, and whatever else I can grab.I also completed my honors thesis on the western genre and consider myself an expert on the fictional cowboy! When I am not reading I like to backpack and explore the southwest. I have an old truck that I love and nothing makes me happier than parking it in a beautiful place, making tea on the tailgate, and enjoying the view.
About Me
I graduated magna cum laude with departmental honors in creative writing from Seattle University in 2017. Since then I have been working as a crew supervisor at a youth conservation corps and as an adventure travel guide for teenagers. I am also currently enrolled in the UNM secondary education master's program at UNM and working toward my teaching license. I have been nationally recognized for both my leadership and my academic achievements (NIRSA's William N. Wasson Award).
Experience
I worked as a writing consultant at Seattle University. I took courses in grammar, punctuation, editing, and tutoring in addition to my regular English and writing coursework in order to mentor and teach other students in writing. I also worked as a writer-for-hire and had an essay published in the Allyn and Bacon Guide to writing. I continue to use and grow my skills every day as I work in Positive Youth Development and outdoor education.
Approach
I think we, teachers and tutors and adults, often forget what a vulnerable position students are in. As we look for areas of improvement students feel like we are highlighting their weaknesses and focusing on their failures. It is my aim to make students feel safe and create a judgment-free place where learning can become fun and can feel empowering. Every student is strong and smart, we just need to give them the right support.
