Fun Facts

I love music and fitness! I was a piano performance major before switching to history. People often find me inadvertently conducting when I hear great music! I also love being in the gym! I had a back injury that prevented me from being very active for about 20 years, but I recently had back surgery, and am LOVING getting back in shape!

About Me

I have a Master's degree in African American history, and my undergrad degree was in history with a minor in English literature. I taught college history for four years, and am currently applying to student teach in the Denver area, to obtain my teaching license. My plan is to teach high school history or English.

Experience

Throughout college and graduate school, I spent a lot of time tutoring my classmates in history, literature, writing, and music theory. I taught college history at Southeast Missouri State University for four years. Since moving to Colorado, I have tutored students from middle school through high school, in subjects such as music, history, English, and math.

Approach

I have multiple learning disabilities, and have learned that each person, learning disabled or not, has a specific way he or she learns best. I always strive to find that, whatever it is. I find that adding real life applications to what a student is learning, generally helps immensely, and I am always asking students how we can apply this to real life.

English Tutoring

My minor in college was English literature, and I did very well in those classes. I was particularly successful in helping my classmates improve writing and reading comprehension skills.

Graduate Level Writing Tutoring

Because I have a Master's degree in history, I did extensive writing over the course of getting my degree, including a 90 page thesis. I never struggled with my writing, and often helped my classmates strengthen their writing skills on longer assignments.

History Tutoring

I have a Master's degree in history, so my knowledge of the subject is fairly extensive. In addition, I taught history at Southeast Missouri State University for four years. Throughout my time teaching, I assisted many students one-on-one in grasping historical facts and concepts.

Study Skills Tutoring

I have always been effective in my studying, making it through my B.A. with a 3.19 GPA. I had a 3.9 GPA in my M.A. program, largely because I was effective at managing my time, reading and noting important information from what I read, and making flash cards and charts when necessary.

Writing Tutoring

Throughout college and graduate school, my highest scores came from my writing assignments. I often assisted my classmates in learning how to write more effectively. I am good at helping people break down writing assignments into more manageable pieces, and work from there.

AP English Tutoring

My minor was English literature in college, and I did very well in those classes. I also frequently helped my classmates with their assignments, particularly in reading comprehension and writing. I am also currently tutoring a high school Senior in English, and have seen significant improvement in his work over the last year.

AP History Tutoring

I have a Master's degree in history. I also taught history at Southeast Missouri State University for four years, and tutored a high school Junior in history last year.

Homework Coach Tutoring

This past summer, I spent every day helping a rising high school Senior manage his coursework for three summer school classes, and made sure he progressed at a good pace. Good homework management skills are vital for academic success. I have also helped classmates learn time management and organization skills in college and graduate school.

Middle School Math Tutoring

Last school year, through this summer, I tutored two middle schoolers in 4th and 5th grade math. I have always struggled with math, so I particularly love teaching middle schoolers how to solve math problems, and perhaps helping them make associations that can help with math concepts.

Music Theory Tutoring

I was originally a music theory and composition/piano performance major, and I completed all undergraduate theory and ear training. I also taught the piano for several years, and love teaching music theory!
