Fun Facts
If you let me, I will talk washington/seattle">Seattle sports with you all day. I love everything that has to do with UW. This past summer, I spent two months backpacking around Europe with three of my good friends. Sarcasm is my weapon of choice. I hate olives and onions.
About Me
Born in California, I was raised in Washington for most of my life. UW was the only college I applied to and spent four of the best years of my life there. Although I majored in Industrial Design, I felt an urge to do something completely different, so I applied for Teach For America (TFA). Accepting the offer from TFA was difficult because it meant I had to move away from the comfort of the west coast and live in Philadelphia for at least two years.
The time I spent in Philadelphia working to close the academic achievement gap was an experience of a lifetime. While pursuing a Masters in Education of the University of Pennsylvania, I worked as a full time math teacher in an inner city K-8 school with extremely poor test scores. Though it seemed impossible at times, I was able to teach and motivate students (7th and 8th grade) to invest in academics and eventually raise their scores by an average of 20% on state tests.
My favorite part of teaching was developing positive relationships with students and leading them to believe that math was actually relevant in their daily lives. I understand that math isn't for everyone, but my goal is get students to believe in themselves and that math can actually be enjoyable. With positive reinforcement and relentless dedication, I use my sense of humor along with my laid back attitude to allow students to become comfortable in the working environment. I also encourage plenty of questions, as I feel they are critical to a student's development. As an education, I strongly believe that any student can achieve absolutely anything.
