Fun Facts
I have 206 different bones in my skeleton, which, along with various muscles, I am using to type this section. I also have 12 pairs of cranial nerves (though I subconsciously treat my olfactory bulbs as separate cranial nerves because 13 cranial nerve pairs are stuck randomly in my head). My superficial venous arches vary pretty radically between my left (which take a more traditional arch motif) and right (which appear to be 2 separate veins, 1 vaguely parallel to my palm between my 2nd and 3rd
About Me
I graduated from the University of North Texas with a MS in "Teaching in the Life Sciences" in May of 2008 (GPA 3.91). I also have a BS in biology with a minor in chemistry in May of 2005 (GPA approx 3.79). I currently work as an adjunct professor with Tarrant Co. Community College, but am trying to find a learning/development position outside of academia. I am also dabbling in edu-tainment gaming development. See my personal business website for more details.
I have 15+ years of some form of teaching experience, ranging from middle school to adult learning at both the community college and 4-year university level. One-on-one tutoring with students typically occur during office hours (plus, at least at the college level, randomly asking students if they need help while they study in the halls when my schedule allows me to amble). I have successfully tutored students in Latin, Biology, and college-level math outside of the traditional class/office hour setting.
Proper tutoring starts with an examination of student learning styles (I personally lean pretty heavily on Gardner's MI theory and Flemming's VARK theory) in order to help the student learn how (s)he learns and to tailor the experience towards how the student learns easiest. After that has been more or less established, spot treatment of gaps in course content and organizational methodologies takes priority, with supplemental (id est, outside of current unit work like “pre-teaching” material from the next unit or level-appropriate material outside the scope of the current course) instruction handling weeks when spot treatment is not needed. Tutoring is done in conversational style instead of a pure lecture format.
