Fun Facts

Anytime I have some free time, I like to spend it with my friends and family! I'm also very career oriented so I participate in a lot of extracurricular networking events for work. Summer is my favorite season and I try to spend as much time as possible at the beach! I love to sing, although I haven't done it competitively in quite a while - karaoke is still so much fun!

About Me

I currently work full time as an IT recruiter at a small staffing agency. However, education has always been my passion and I graduate with honors(GPA: 3.8) in December of 2018 with a Bachelor's in Education from houston">the houston">University of Houston Clear Lake. I will soon be taking my state exams to become a certified teacher. I will be certified to teach Pre-K up to 6th grade and hope to start my teaching career in August 2019 when the new school year begins!

Experience

Before my current job, I was a education/texas/houston">Special Education paraprofessional at Lomax Elementary for 2 years. Before that, I was an after-school program director for 4 years, and worked at a daycare with 4 year olds during the day. I have 4 younger siblings, all of which I have tutored in core subjects (mostly math and language arts) at some point. I'd love to start tutoring elementary students in my free time and give kiddos the one-on-one time they need in order to be successful!

Approach

As a child, it's important to have a support system that believes in your success. My favorite part of teaching has always been watching the light bulb go off in the child's brain when they figure out that they CAN do something that they thought they couldn't. I have had teachers in my own school experiences that operate on a "sink or swim" basis - this is not my philosophy at all. With the right guidance and support, I believe students can learn and grow far beyond their own expectations!

Homework Coach Tutoring

At my past position as an after-school program director, part of my job was to sit down with the children each day and do Homework help. Homework subjects varied from Kindergarten to 5th grade, and covered all core subjects.

Elementary Math Tutoring

I have always excelled in math and focused on math skills a lot as a Special Education paraprofessional. I co taught several 3rd grade math classrooms and hope to have the opportunity to teach math in my future teaching career.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I have taken several courses on the fundamentals of reading comprehension. I have also taught several Shared Reading and Interactive Writing lessons to kindergarten students. I have conducted many state assessments (as a college case study - not officially) for reading comprehension such as running records where comprehension is assessed after the student reads an instructional level text

Writing Tutoring

I have always enjoyed writing and have excelled in it as a student. As a teacher candidate, I am required to write on a daily basis. In my experience as a SPED para, I had the opportunity to work with dyslexic children on their writing skills, focusing on sentence structure. I have also taught several interactive writing lessons where students "share the pen" and practice on writing sounds they hear in words. I have also conducted numerous states assessments (for a college case study - not officially) where I assessed the students' abilities to write out sounds they hear and put them in sentence form.
