Fun Facts

Something fun about me is that I'm an avid writer of poetry and prose and am getting ready to publish some of my own works!
Something else is that my first language was Mandarin Chinese but neither my parents or grandparents speak the language! I lost most of my Mandarin skills over time but I'm still able to speak the basics.

About Me

I'm currently getting my degree at Capella University in Child Psychology with my ultimate goal, which is to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. I'm currently also an ABA therapist to kids with Autism or on the Autism spectrum.

Experience

I've been tutoring students as well as peers for the past seven years. I've worked with atypical and typical students in various subjects. I'm currently tutoring students from Kindergarten to Juniors in High School and have had college students in the past. What's great is that while I'm working with many students, working for Frog Tutoring gives me even more opportunities to branch out and meet so many new people in all walks of life.

Approach

When I was in 5th grade, I had two teachers whose teaching styles didn't agree with me and many other students. They wanted to flunk me and it made me start feeling hopeless in my academic studies. I went all the way up to my Freshman year in high school where I met an amazing teacher who helped me realize that there was so much more to learning than what my teachers had shown me! I learned that I'm a very hands-on learner and it was a huge discovery and led me to feel confident in myself again.

Algebra Tutoring

I understand that math can be difficult for students who feel as if they will never understand it or be able to succeed in the subject. I felt that way too when I was younger, which is why I strive to make my students feel confident in both themselves in math, and as a student in general. I currently have 10 students, 2 of whom are being tutored in elementary math, English literature, homework completion, and study skills.

English Tutoring

My original major was going to be English when I first started college. I was a tutor at an afterschool center in a nearby city where I taught students up to sophomores in high school English Literature. I also have 1 student who is a junior in high school whom I am tutoring in English.

ESL Tutoring

My first language was not English so I make sure that I tutor at least 1 student per school semester whose first language isn't English so they can feel confident in a language that isn't their first. I currently have 2 students whose first language isn't English as of December 4th.

GED Tutoring

Over the past 7 years, I have had 3 students who wished to take the GED in both California and Colorado. All 3 of my students have passed with flying colors of 87% or higher. I'm looking to gain more students in this subject who want to improve their chances of career advancement.

Homework Coach Tutoring

With every student I have ever taught I had made sure that their homework was completed on time and turned in to their respective teachers. I find this especially important in high school as these grades are heavily counted towards their college applications. I make sure every high school student is ahead on their projects, homework assignments, and prepared for their upcoming tests. I currently have 10 students, all of whom are getting homework coaching.

Pre Algebra Tutoring

Math can be a very tricky subject and I know firsthand how it can seem hopeless to those who can't figure it out. This is why I make sure that my students in Pre-Algebra are ahead of their homework and have ample time to study for their upcoming tests and quizzes. I have had 3 students currently and in the past for Pre-Algebra at the high school level over the past 4 years.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Before becoming a tutor part-time I was a student teacher at an afterschool learning center where I taught English reading and comprehension to students of various ages all the way up to Sophomores in high school. After I left the company, I tutored 6 more students at high school level English reading and comprehension. I currently have 1 student in high school whom I tutor in this subject.

Study Skills Tutoring

When I was in elementary school, I had a hard time studying because I didn't realize that I was a hands-on learner. As a tutor, I make sure to accommodate different learning styles into my study skills teachings. There are various ways to teach a subject and I make sure that all of my students can "teach" me the subject as if I had never learned it before. I currently have 10 students now, all whom I help with their study skills.

Writing Tutoring

I worked at an afterschool learning center before becoming a part-time tutor where I taught students how to comprehend their writing tasks and make sure their writing was on par or above their parents' expectations. As a tutor, I make sure that my students write to their full potential and learn how to be proud of their work. I am also working on becoming a published writer with an upcoming book debuting sometime in June 2019.

Math Tutoring

I understand first-hand how difficult math can be to someone who is struggling in the subject. My goal is to make sure that each student feels confident in their middle school math capabilities as high school math gets a lot more intense. I want to give middle schoolers a head start and feel ready to move on towards more advanced math levels. I currently have 1 middle school student in math who feels more confident now more than ever.

Middle School Math Tutoring

Math in middle school can seem tricky to those who don't feel confident in their abilities. My goal as a tutor is to make sure that my students feel confident in their middle school math basics before moving on towards more difficult math structures associated with Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, and so on. I want my students to feel confident in their structure so they can feel confident when they become high schoolers and their math subjects get more difficult and intense. I have 1 current student in middle school math who feels much more confident now than at the beginning of the school year.

Elementary Math Tutoring

In elementary school, I had a very hard time understanding math. I want my elementary school students to become more confident in their capabilities and be able to set their goals high. I currently have 2 students in elementary school math who are more confident in their abilities now than when they first started the school year.
