Intermediate Classical/Jazz Music Tutor

Fun Facts

I am a professional musician, and have dedicated my entire life to the craft. I am the eldest of two boys, the younger of whom has special needs. I have a deep-seated fascination with politics and world history, and am very knowledgeable of both despite my lack of education in either field. I have dedicated my educational career to studying music, and intend to eventually open my own recording label and sponsor young jazz artists.

About Me

I am an incoming junior at the University of New Orleans, and I am involved in the instrumental jazz studies curriculum. I have made the Dean's List once already, and am constantly urged to join the honors program despite my lack of interest. It is my first year of college education, however I was enrolled in enough college courses during high school that I was permitted to test out of many of my required courses; I also earned experience at NOCCA for the same field.

Experience

During my time at NOCCA, I was also enrolled at Mandeville High School where I irregularly gave out-of-class and unofficial lessons to underclassmen who required help for auditions, other lessons, classes, etc. I greatly enjoyed spending time with students, and have been eager to officially begin teaching with the support of an organization, such as Frog, as I would like very much to promote the musical development of aspiring artists.

Approach

I did not experience any great struggle in high school, and during that time I was able to determine that a rigorous curriculum with enough material to keep myself busy and interested was the best way to progress. I would never deliberately give a student a more intense workload than I believed them to be capable of, but I also intend to challenge students in a way that promotes them to explore advanced concepts on their own so that they may retain a deeper understanding of the material.

AP English Tutoring

I received excellent grades in both the Gifted English I&II curriculum in high school, where I was asked to analyse complex literature (Dostoevsky, Dante, Virgil, Homer, Nabokov, Poe, Dickens, etc.). I had a great deal of experience reading literature in middle school, where I voluntarily read the unabridged Frankenstein and Dracula. I never received below a B in any English Class, including a dual-enrollement English class at SELU.

Music Theory Tutoring

I spent a year participating in the NOCCA Jazz Studies course, which requires me to take classical theory, jazz improvisation (jazz theory), and private lessons. I was accepted into several honor groups for both classical and jazz, which furthered my resolve to learn everything I could about music of all genres. I also am enrolled in a sophomore-level jazz theory class at UNO, where I have earned an A consistently.

Writing Tutoring

I have a great amount of experience as an author, participating and winning many writing competitions while in both junior high school and high school. During the course of one of these competitions I was actually published, and am currently in the process of writing a satire for the school news paper. I was also a part of several writing clubs during my educational career.

Writing Advance Tutoring

I have a great deal of experience in writing college-level essays and term papers, and have a history of receiving good grades in them. During high school I was enrolled in two different English courses, and I earned good grades in both. I also earned a 35 on the English portion of the ACT, and I earned a high grade on the writing portion as well.

English Tutoring

I have taken High School Gifted English I & II (A-B average), Honors English III (A-B average) and Dual-Enrollment English IV with SELU (A-B average). I also have taken the ACT and obtained a score of 35 in the English portion, and I received a near-perfect score in the optional Writing portion. I also have tutored my peers in an unprofessional setting in which I would meet with them either over the phone or in person, and am responsible for helping many students successfully pass their various English courses (many of which I had not even taken).

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Gifted English I & II were originally conceived to be unofficial literature courses during the time that I was enrolled; I read and was told to analyze works by Dante Alighieri, Vladimir Nabokov, Fydor Dostoevsky, Herman Melville, Homer, Charles Dickens, Sun Tzu, and many others. I performed academic analysis at a very high level and received an A-B average in the course. I helped many fellow students who also took that course not only with the literature comprehension component of the course, but with the creative writing portion as well. I also went on to help other students compose essays based off of works by Shakespeare as well as epics such as Beowulf and the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Composition Tutoring

During my time at NOCCA, I was often given assignments that included composition in different classical, theoretical, and periodical styles; as a result, I can confidently compose music that will suit almost any occasion or genre. I often would review the works of my peers, and I have a great deal of experience with composing by creating pieces of my own. I also have experience in arranging and have arranged individual parts and scores for various groups at UNO, NOCCA, and Mandeville High.

Ear Training Tutoring

Having taken Jazz courses over the span of four years, I have been required to make ear training a large part of my daily routine. I know many different exercises for improving the ear, and I have spent a great deal of time working those exercises out with students with a less-developed ear. While ear training requires constant improvement, I am still able to competently listen to melodies and transcribe them, which remains a large portion of my curriculum even to this day.

General Music Tutoring

I am a multi-instrumentalist who has been playing music for the better part of a decade. Over the course of this time, I have participated in constant instruction in theory, intonation, time, rhythm, style, sight-reading, and music history. I have participated in concert orchestras, rock bands, jazz combos and big bands, Latin groups, world music ensembles, and countless entries in between. I have taken band classes for over seven years (including audition-based honor bands) and jazz classes for over four, and have never received a grade in a music class below a 90. When I was to audition for NOCCA, I was admitted into the Level III jazz program despite it being my first and only year there.

Music History Tutoring

During my time at Mandeville High, I had taken a dual-enrollment World History class through SELU and received a B; during this course, the cultures of other civilizations were discussed at great length, and this included the different styles of music to some degree. I also was required to take a music history component for my major, yet I was able to test out of it despite never having taken an official "music history" class. I am very knowledgeable on the extent of the development of Western Harmony as it relates to the development of modern/contemporary music, and I attribute this greatly to being given a great deal of instruction on the subject unofficially during my time at NOCCA.

Music Theory Tutoring

I have taken and received an A in Advanced Theory as a part of NOCCA's Jazz Studies courseload, and am currently enrolled in the UNO Jazz Department's Jazz Theory class, where I hold an A average; I was also enrolled in a one-semester Theory I class at Mandeville High, where I also earned an A. As a result of this, I have obtained a great deal of experience with both classical and modern theory, and have spent a great deal of time helping fellow students improve their knowledge of theory.

Saxophone Tutoring

The saxophone is my primary instrument, and it is one that I have spent the most amount of time and energy perfecting to the best of my ability. I have taken private instruction from various professional saxophonists and brilliant players from both New Orleans and Covington. I have had the chance to work with true masters of the instrument during my time at NOCCA, and continue to study under local legends as a part of my current course load. I have done my best to absorb as much information from these people as is possible, and each amazing musician I have worked with has left an imprint on my playing. I have been playing on the professional level myself for a little over a year, and have played at such events as the local Jazz Fest and the Tall Ships Fest. All of this experience has given me information that I could certainly pass on to the aspiring player who is looking to improve their mastery of the saxophone.
