When I started my junior year of college, I wanted to give back to my community. I had been teaching the Catholic religion to elementary school aged children for several years, but I wanted to help even more. I applied to my university's maryland/maryland/baltimore">baltimore">tutoring center where I have worked with several different students in various subjects. I continue to maryland/maryland/baltimore">baltimore">tutor students at my home university today. Additionally, I assisted with elementary students with their homework at my after school care center. I enjoy helping students and I love when the information that I tell them starts to click in their mind.
I believe that the best way to help another person understand a subject is to walk the student through the problem and to use a bit of humor. In many of my classes, my teachers used their sense of humor to help us understand a topic. Not only did I get to laugh, but the information that was explained to me seemed to stay in my memory longer. Additionally, it is important to encourage a student to consistently practice what he or she is having the most trouble with. Lastly, I like to provide students with additional information that I think could help in a handout form.
