Fun Facts
I am originally from orange">Orange, Connecticut. I left the North to to come down to Charlotte to escape the brutal winters! I am very busy with school, but when I do have free time I love to spend it reading. Currently I have been very interested in reading about different learning techniques in a classroom. I just read about how yoga should be practiced in class because it lowers test anxiety.
About Me
I am a freshman at queens-university-of-charlotte">Queens University of Charlotte studying Elementary Education. As a minor I will be taking Psychology, and I would like to focus on developmental psychology. I won a scholarship competition that granted me the opportunity to be a part of an elite group of Education major called "Cato Fellows" I plan on graduating with my masters, and possibly even obtaining a masters in speech pathology, I would also love to live another state after I graduate here in North Carolina.
Being part of the "Cato Fellows" has offered me many wonderful opportunities, one of them being able to charlotte">tutor at an underprivileged school. I have been professionally trained by my professor to carry on charlotte">tutoring lessons. I have my own work book, and the students have theirs. In a group, I work with students to read through passages, and answer the following questions. I am helping them learn vital test taking skills that they will need for the rest of their academic careers. I also tutored in High School for an 8 year old boy on his reading-comprehension/north-carolina/charlotte">reading comprehension as well. Not as intensively, there weren't any workbooks involved. I sat with him for an hour every week while he read his book, and then I would have him write a summary of what he read, but making sure he only included the main points.
As a child, I struggled a lot with reading-comprehension/north-carolina/charlotte">reading comprehension. I loved to read, but I would get very nervous and overwhelmed when I was timed and if there were a lot of questions. I find it common that when children dislike subjects, it's because the subject is either boring, or it stressed them out. My approach is to make learning fun so it is not boring anymore, and relieves the anxiety. For example, for my current charlotte">tutoring opportunity I have turned my readers into "detectives" I made them badges, and at the end of each session they earn a gold star they can put on their badge. I chose the detective theme because it is relevant to reading. Readers have to search for clues and evidence in the passage
