About Me
I’m a recent transplant to the Bay Area. I am originally from Brooklyn New York and went to Hampshire College in Amherst Massachusetts. I studied international women’s rights and public health with a focus on HIV prevention and sex education. Hampshire is a unique place where the students design their own majors choosing classes that interest them. My experience at Hampshire gave me the unique opportunity to discover a love for learning that wasn’t motivated by grades but instead by a passionate thirst for knowledge. In college I studied abroad in Costa Rica and then the following year Argentina. On both my trips I worked with students teaching English in Costa Rica and working in an orphanage in Argentina. Those trips fostered my love for working with you and a desire to travel the world. I realized that while I am still getting my footing as a professional I would be better suited to live in different parts of the United States.
After college I moved to New Orleans and worked as a tutor/mentor with City Year. I worked in a charter school that took over one of New Orleans many failing schools. I worked in a math classroom helping 6th and 7th graders understand the material, stay focused and I worked a lot with the students that were academically behind to help them catch up with the rest of the class. I tutored students in small groups and one-on-one sessions. My students last year were very high need. I had a lot of success working with them. I was drawn to working with City Year because they supported my colleague and I with our tutoring skills by giving us trainings each month to improve our techniques and give us new tools to work with various students of different ages and backgrounds.
My tutoring style it is fairly straightforward, I identify the learning style of my students and work with them to thrive. I like lessons to be interactive and engaging. For instance, games are something I find very helpful, and I like using colored pencils to help make cer
