Fun Facts

While a mathematician at heart, I also greatly enjoy the theatre arts. In college I was a double major in Mathematics and Theatre, and I had several on stage appearances in shows including "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead," "Macbeth," "You Can't Take it With You," and "Compleat Female Stage Beauty." My profile picture is from my performance in "You Can't Take it With You." I have also played the clarinet and baritone saxophone for several years, though I admit that music is not my greates

About Me

I was born in Alfred, Maine, where I lived for most of my childhood. Once in high school my family moved, and I attended the Maine School of Science and Mathematics, a magnet school specializing in mathematics and the physical sciences in Limestone, Maine, which is pretty much part of Canada. Not wanting to leave Canada too far behind, I earned my undergraduate degrees in Math and Theatre at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. After graduation, I took a year off to enjoy living in Vermont before moving to Boston to pursue my Masters of Arts in Teaching Secondary Mathematics. While here I have had the privilege to attend the PROMYS for Teachers program, which is a six week intensive summer session in Number Theory, which I enjoyed greatly.

As far as boston">tutoring experience goes, I have been boston">tutoring informally since middle school, when I started a math club with a few friends so we could hone our math skills, and help one another with any subjects we struggled in. Throughout high school I served as a peer boston">tutor to many friends, as well as a few people I met through boston">tutoring them. In college I served as a shop assistant for one theatre class, which meant I helped them to learn how to use power tools, and how to construct sets for the stage. While this is the only formal boston">tutoring experience I have, I also tutored informally for other theatre students who struggled in mathematics.

My boston">tutoring philosophy is very similar to my teaching philosophy. boston">Tutoring and teaching should be student focused, giving the student the opportunity to show what they know, and explore concepts so they can discover the mathematics for themselves. This guided exploration provides a richer learning experience for students, and leads to a much greater understanding of the concepts and longer retention.
