About Me
I hold a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from SUNY - New Paltz, where I also minored in Spanish. While in college I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina for a year. After college, I worked for two years as a Financial Counselor, primarily with Spanish-speaking clients. I recently completed a two-year stint in the Peace Corps, serving in a small rural town in Paraguay. There I taught English, computers, business, and financial literacy classes.
Experience
While in college, I worked as Tutor for three years in the university's tutoring center. I had over 30 students during this time. The subject I most often helped with was Spanish but I also tutored in English and Writing, as well as for International Relations and Political Science classes. After college I continue to teach private Spanish classes to several students in my neighborhood. While in Paraguay during my free time, I tutored several students in English and with general homework help.
Approach
While working as a tutor in college, I developed specific strategies to allow my students to reach their highest potential in the subject they were learning. I facilitated an approach that would emphasize their participation and active learning. Even if it was necessary to explain a concept for the first 10 minutes of the lesson, I leave time for the student to practice this concept and to reach their own understanding. I have found this to be a more effective and engaging method of teaching.
