Fun Facts
I was homeschooled from fourth grade through eighth grade, I was in 4-H and raised and showed rabbits for nine years, and I am a San Francisco Giants fan. I have only been outside of California once in my life, but I hope to travel the world eventually!
About Me
I am currently in my final undergraduate semester as an English major at San Jose State University. My overall GPA is 3.877 and my major GPA is 3.83. I hope to teach high school English, so my concentration is English Education. I plan to pursue either a teaching credential or a master's degree in English following my graduation. In my years in 4-H I held many leadership positions both at the club level and at the county level which provided me with opportunities to work with adolescents of a wide range of ages.
While I have never worked in a tutoring center before, I have worked with many students (both high school students and my peers) to help them write essays for their English classes. I have worked personally in students' homes to help them through the writing process and have also worked with students in high school classrooms to help them edit their essays. I have completed 16 hours of the pre-professional observation hours required for a teaching credential, during which time I presented a lesson plan on the writing process and peer editing sessions and worked individually with students to edit their essays.
My approach to tutoring students involves encouraging them to have confidence in their strengths. When I work with English students, I always encourage them to do the majority of the talking during the session. I often find that when I read students’ rough drafts and can see that they are struggling to form a clear thesis or develop a logical flow of ideas, they frequently are able to vocally convey their thought process much easier. Therefore, as a tutor I believe it is my job to simply listen, provide feedback, and help them structure their own original thoughts into clear, concise writing. I always emphasize students’ strengths, but also try to enable them to recognize their own errors so that they gain the ability to read literature and write about it independently and confidently.
