One thing you will learn about me is that I love to play the violin. I have been playing my great grandfather's violin in an orchestra all through high school. I have a pet python at home as well. I have never broken a bone nor been stung by a bee, and I have one older brother. Finally, I love to write poetry and novels! One day I hope to be published.
About Me
I am a junior at Santa Clara University majoring in psychology with an emphasis in psychobiology. I have a 3.917 overall and I hope to attend graduate school at the washington">University of Washington to study neuroscience. My career goal is to become a neuropsychologist who diagnoses patients with neurological concerns and to participate in research to broaden scientific knowledge within today's society.
In high school I took advantage of my volunteering requirement to tutor young children in the first and second grades at Stevens Elementary in washington/seattle">Seattle on math, writing, and reading-comprehension/california/san-jose">reading comprehension. I was matched with two students to be their mentor throughout a one to two year period. During this time, I could oversee their development as young students. Additionally, I was the assistant teacher at the St. Joseph Parish Sunday School for preschool-aged children, where I helped them develop social as well as basic motor skills once a week. Finally, over the summer I was a case aide for a seven year old foster child through Accent Care. Through collaborating with a team that included her foster mother, a counselor, and the social workers we were able to foster her healing and growth as a child.
Having had a considerable amount of experience working with children in educational and developmental environments, I find the most important aspect as a tutor is to be a good role model. I do not want to give them direct answers but rather cultivate a curious and inquisitive attitude that will help them immediately as well as in the future. As a tutor I generally try to guide them through every step along the process so that they understand the means by which we arrive at a logical conclusion. I encourage them to ask a lot of questions, especially ones that even I have trouble answering, because it allows for the both of us to develop a strong body of knowledge.
Experience
I have been a tutor since high school, where I spent many hours a week with elementary students at a school in washington/seattle">Seattle, WA where I am from. Since then, I have joined Frog Tutoring which gives me the opportunity to continue!
Approach
I try to offer my students a comfortable environment so that they look forward to our sessions. If someone is struggling in school, I have found that it is often the stress and level of strictness in the classroom environment that affects their motivation to learn. I want to provide them with a method that is different than what is offered in school, because new perspectives are often key to fully understanding a concept.
