I enjoy outdoor activities such as kayaking, camping, and backpacking. In my free time, I can be found curled up with a good book and a cup of tea. I also enjoy writing. I always look forward to attending poetry readings on campus and participating in volunteer activities, especially when these projects provide me with the opportunity to share my passion for learning with younger students.
About Me
I am a freshman at Emory University and I plan to major in English and Educational Studies. After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school and receive my teaching certificate so I can pursue a career as a high school English teacher. I will continue to grow in knowledge and explore the areas that interest me because I think it is very important to be a life-long learner.
This semester, I helped two high school students polish admissions essays as part of Education Studies class project. In high school, I was a Writing Lab atlanta">tutor assisted high school students in editing assignments improving their writing skills. As National Honor Society peer atlanta">tutor, I worked with other high school students by providing homework help for a variety of subjects. I also had a unique atlanta">tutoring experience as an Outdoor Odyssey mentor. I interacted one-on-one with two students (one middle school, one high school) as we improved their reading-comprehension/georgia/atlanta">reading comprehension, study habits, and other academic skills for success in school. As a babysitter I often help the kids I was watching finish their homework.
As a atlanta">tutor, my responsibility is to respect the students while we work together. By building a trusting relationship with students, I can learn their weaknesses as well as their strengths. By using strengths as a tool to work on areas that need improvement, I can help students gain the knowledge they need to succeed and develop confidence that will help them overcome future academic challenges. Encouragement and patience are key elements to a good atlanta">tutoring session. I have learned to keep calm and positive when students are frustrated. When I keep a proper, positive mindset, I can guide students through difficulties and help them step by step to discover solutions. I never atlanta">tutor as though I am holding a solution hostage from a student; instead, we work through the problem together.
