Fun Facts

I've had the incredible opportunity of spending a total of about six months solo traveling in Northern Africa, Asia, and Parts of Europe throughout the past few years. One of my highlights has been attending a local wedding while couch-surfing in Egypt, but I can talk about cheap travel for hours! I'm also an avid downhill skier, and I love hiking, cooking, dancing, and yoga, and I'm an extremely sub-par (read: truly abysmal) but enthusiastic tennis player.

About Me

I graduated from Pitzer College (of the Claremont Colleges) in May with a degree in Sociology and Organizational Studies with a Politics focus. I graduated with honors (a 3.9 GPA) and am a Fulbright Scholar; I'm currently in Seattle until I begin my Fulbright Fellowship teaching English in Malaysia in January of 2020. Ultimately, I hope to work for the United Nations (lofty dream, I know!) in the realm of education equity.

Experience

Teaching has been a facet of my life for many years and I'm excited to continue this trend! In high school, my summers consisted of working as a day camp counselor as well as teaching English abroad through various organizations; during the school year, I tutored middle and elementary-aged students through YTP and at The Bush School. Most recently, I worked as a Head Fellow at my college's writing center, supporting students through all stages of the writing process and mentoring other tutors.

Approach

I believe that academics have the potential to be profoundly empowering or profoundly disempowering and my goal as a tutor is always to work collaboratively with students to figure out how we can make the process as painless as possible. I fundamentally don't believe in the idea of being a "bad writer" or "bad reader," etc.: every individual has their own unique skills, experiences, and perspectives that allow them to comprehend and create differently, and harnessing that energy is powerful.

I additionally took courses such as Social and Political Justice, Critical Community Studies, Research Methods for Community Change, Social Inequality, Race & Ethnic Relations, and Organizational Theory, each of which addressed education through their specific lenses. My expertise within this realm is educational inequality and centers pedagogy oriented around social justice and equity.

Additionally, I served as the Student Senator on my college's Academic Planning Committee, where I was responsible for considering and/or recommending policy changes concerning academics, admissions, and allocation of academic funds, particularly concerning long-term strategies and developments at Pitzer College.

Graduate Level Writing Tutoring

Throughout college, I worked as a Fellow, Fellowship Consultant, and Head Fellow at my college's Writing Center. This experience entailed a semester-long course (Writing Center Praxis & Theory) as well as yearly training surrounding academic writing pedagogy. As a Fellowship Specialist, I attended specialized trainings geared toward understanding how to craft successful fellowship applications, personal statements, and grant proposals. I additionally took and subsequently TA'd the course, Global-Local Teaching Workshop, the content of which entailed assisting students in writing Fellowship Applications.

As a fellow, I tutored students ages seventeen to sixty-five throughout all stages of the writing process and edited student work. The bulk of my clients were working on senior theses, graduate school personal statements, and academic papers. As a Head Fellow, I mentored other tutors, developed and led staff meetings and training sessions regarding tutoring strategies, and led a weekly thesis-writing workshop. I love working with students on writing in any capacity, and my breadth of experience qualifies me for graduate-level writing.

As an Organizational Studies major, my focus was in Politics, thus I took a breadth of politics courses including Gender, Politics & American Culture, Politics & LIterature, Future of Higher Education, Theorizing Unfreedoms, Social & Political Justice, and Politics of Homelessness. I received A's and A-'s in all of these courses.

Sociology Tutoring

I graduated from Pitzer College (of the Claremont Colleges) with honors in Sociology, so I'd be excited to work with any Sociology student!

Relevant courses included Sociology & View of the World, Social Inequality, Gender and Media, Sociology of Education, Social & Political Justice, Race & Ethnic Relations, Gender Theory, Quantitative Research Methods, Rape Culture & The College Campus, Critical Community Studies, and Research Methods for Community Change. I additionally completed a senior thesis wherein I executed qualitative, community-grounded, ethnographic research surrounding immigrants in the Inland Empire.

Study Skills Tutoring

Throughout college, I consistently took a full course load while working six hours/week as a writing tutor, between seven and ten hours per week as an EmPOWER Center Intern, volunteering as a Legal Advocate for Survivors of Sexual Assault, serving as president of Pitzer Advocates for Survivors of Sexual Assault, acting as a Student Senator, and interning at the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice.

Though the content of these endeavors didn't center study skills, juggling these commitments while maintaining a social life and graduating with honors definitely required a high level of organization and prioritization. That being said, my study skills haven't always been stellar (in high school I was known for being the queen of procrastination and all-nighters), so I know what it's like to struggle in this capacity and I would love to work with anyone in cultivating the skills and habits to make academics as painless as possible.
