Fun Facts

I am a bibliophile, for I read one to two books a week and I covet books as my personal treasures. Not only do I love to read, but I enjoy writing poetry as well. I am fairly outdoorsy and until very recently I was in a Venture Crew, co-ed boy-scouting.

About Me

I'm a second year sophomore at the denver">University of Denver where I major in English, specifically concentrating in secondary English education. I made the Dean's List last quarter with a 3.9 GPA taking 16 credit hours. After college I plan to apply for America Corp and eventually teach abroad. I've been recognized with many leadership awards through the Boy Scouts of America and high school. In high school I earned Academic excellence awards for all four years by maintaining all As and Bs.

I have a bounty of denver">tutoring experience. Through the Peer denver">Tutoring program in middle school I tutored special needs children in math and reading-comprehension/colorado/denver">reading comprehension everyday for two months. In high school, through "Everyone Reads", I tutored a first grader in reading-comprehension/colorado/denver">reading comprehension biweekly for the entire academic school year. This program targeted low ranking schools in Kentucky to help provide more resources to improve literacy rates. Throughout high school I worked as a camp counselor during the summer months. For the first quarter of college I tutored a second grader in math with the collegiate volunteer program, Pioneer Partners. I also currently work at a preschool as a teacher's assistant.

I believe most things can be learned when they're put into a context people can understand. If you make a subject relevant and interesting then it seems more worthwhile to the student and more fun. I'm not saying material should be watered down, but that there should be an explanation for how a problem works or why things are the way they are. My approach then is to ask plenty of questions to see what the student knows about the subject or related subjects, and to try and give them many examples and information about a problem. I also believe in encouraging people, letting them know when they do well, while also trying to extract one's true potential by admitting when work is done poorly or when work is rushed.
