Fun Facts

I am a proud Minnesotan basking in the joys of moderate winters and beautiful mountains here in Colorado. I have two younger brothers in Minnesota that I miss tons but Colorado has offered me the opportunity to leap out of my comfort zone. As a lover of learning, I struggle at the denver">University of Denver to narrow my studies to one thing and strive to express creativity everyday.

About Me

I am a sophomore at the denver">University of Denver pursuing a degree in English with minors in Spanish and Ecology and Biodiversity. I currently have a 3.98 GPA and have received a total of $88,000 in academic merit scholarships. In addition I am an active member of the Honors Program (a select 100 students chosen from a class of 1,200) and a Resident Assistant in a first year residence hall assisting 34 first years students with their transition to college. I am still defining my post-graduation goals and exploring careers.

I began denver">tutoring in high school as the Vice President of my school's National Honors Society. In this program I worked weekly with 4th and 5th grade students in after school programs. We mostly focuses on reading-comprehension/colorado/denver">reading comprehension but every session began with homework help. In college, I joined the Bridge Project and was paired with a single 4th grade student from public housing who was behind in reading-comprehension/colorado/denver">reading comprehension. I worked with her every week on homework and reading stories of her choosing. I have also provided help to both of my younger brothers with their high school essays.

When denver">tutoring there are several things I strive to keep in mind. The first is that every child has a different way of learning. Another is that every child is capable of learning. With these facts in mind, I try and begin working with a student by asking them if there is anything they would like to focus on. I think that this question helps involve them in the goal setting process of denver">tutoring, a great way to promote self-motivation. If the student is uncomfortable with asking for help, my next move is to go through work with them or speak with adults in the child's life to make sure trouble areas are being met. Once the goals are set, I approach the child knowing that not all denver">tutoring techniques will work every student. I am always ready and willing to be flexible and problem solve.
