Fun Facts
I am a recent graduate from UCLA, and I earned my major English, receiving both departmental and college honors. I have played clarinet for twelve years and I played piano regularly for four. I have three dogs and two cats, and I love them all! I have interned at a publishing company, a magazine, a talent agency, and a newspaper - at the publishing company, I worked with Neil Strauss, a New York Times Bestseller. I even fact-checked his book, Everyone Loves You When You're Dead (check the credits for my name!) I hope to open my own bakery in the next ten years.
In my free time, I love to read, write, swim, exercise, play and listen to music, bake, cook, watch movies with my older brother, bowl, and hang out with my friends! I have been to ten different European countries, and next on my travel list are Canada and Australia. My favorite book is Catch-22, and my favorite movie is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
About Me
I am a twenty-two year old graduate from UCLA, originally from the small town of Moorpark in Ventura County. I have had many different experiences in tutoring, ranging from working with young kids (elementary age) to my own peers. During college, I worked with a mentorship program, in which I would help young students, usually at the elementary level, do their homework. I built a strong relationship with my mentee, and helped give him motivation to do his homework and try harder in school. In addition, I have always been the "go-to" aid for my friends, helping edit their papers, review their study materials, etc. Many of my friends return to me again and again, thanking me for helping boost their papers from a grade "B" to a grade "A," simply by asking them questions and giving them some helpful and thoughtful advice about their topics. It always helps to have an outsider's perspective when writing a paper, and I can provide that perspective. My writing and editing skills have been polished heavily through writing papers and my honors thesis at UCLA and via my internships in publishing and journalism.
As for my tutoring approach, I like to use the Socratic method, helping students come to their own conclusions about their work. I ask many questions, which then forces the student to ask questions about their own work and ways of thinking and understanding. However, I am never pushy, nor mean, nor short-tempered - I understand that everyone has their own unique way of understanding the material, and everyone has their own learning strengths. For me, my strengths are English, literature, history, and writing; don't even ask me to do addition. The student and I will work together to help bring them up to speed on their materials so they may go into class feeling confident and prepared.
In working with Frog Tutoring, I look forward to working with kids at all ages and all learning types. The skills I gained in high school and college in reading and writing will help me prepare these students for not only their classes at school, for also for the SAT and ACT, for which reading-comprehension/california/los-angeles">reading comprehension and writing are important skills. I will make myself available to the students to help them with all their needs and questions, making them feel comfortable and confident with their reading and writing skills.
