Fun Facts
I am a native Chinese speaker and I came to United States in 2010. The reason I want to be a tutor in Chinese is not only because it is my first language, but also because I'm minor in Applied Linguistics, which is about teaching languages in general. I have also taken a class on teaching Chinese as 2nd language. I know Chinese is a very hard language, but trust me, it can have so much fun.
About Me
I will complete my Bachelor's degree at University of Utah in International Studies (Language and Culture) major and Linguistics (Applied Linguistics) minor in August, 2014. I have an overall GPA 3.60. I got my Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate at the beginning of 2014, and my National Proficiency Test of Mandarin Chinese Certificate when I was in China. I have also taken a class specifically on teaching Chinese as 2nd Language. I am planning to apply graduate school in Education.
I'm a volunteer English instructor in English Skills Learning Center (ESLC). I teach two classes every Wednesday. Both of them have seven students, ages from 30 to 50 years old. They are all low income refugees from countries all over the world. One of my classes is low beginners' class, who can speak every day simple sentences, and the other class is immersion readers' class, who only know the alphabet. Some of these immersion readers can't even read or write in their first language. I really enjoy teaching them English and I think they like me, too.
I understand learning Chinese is a hard experience, but I will make it to have a lot of fun. In my class, l like to involve lots of Total Physical Responses (TPR) and other activities to help my students to learn the language with joy. My class is more like a student centered class, which means the student will more opportunities to talk than me, the tutor.
