Fun Facts
I really enjoy the outdoors, especially hiking. After backpacking in Chile last year for the first time, I am constantly seeking new opportunities to explore the great outdoors. When I'm not having an adventure, I love to read spanish literature; my favorite is Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
About Me
I am a fourth year at the chicago">University of Chicago, graduating this spring with a 3.57 gpa overall (3.55 in Biology major). After I graduate I will be taking a gap year to explore my interests in teaching and will then be enrolling in medical school. I'm not sure what kind of doctor I want to be, but I will most probably be involved in pediatrics. Through my four years in college I have shown my leadership in many different ways, including chicago">tutoring, being involved in several clubs, and serving as a mentor for my peers.
One experience that has motivated me to apply for this position has been chicago">tutoring at the Office of Special Programs – College Prep, which is a program that specializes in helping high school students from diverse backgrounds succeed in school and plan for higher education. I typically chicago">tutor one-on-one or in small groups, and I have seen the impact it can have on students’ academic success – receiving individualized help that tailors to their needs is crucial to bridging any gaps they may have in their education. More than that it fosters an environment that promotes relationships with the students; this has been especially helpful when working with students that lack motivation, because once I am able to form a relationship with them and they are more willing to cooperate.
Through my experiences I have learned to be flexible so that I can learn what teaching method and approach works best for each student, since they all have different learning styles, whether it be more explanatory or more visual, etc. I also try to incorporate relevant scenarios when teaching as to engage the student. I find that using the 'teach-back' method is usually most effective in ensuring that the student has learned the material.
