Fun Facts
I love to play volleyball and would call myself a sports junkie since I like watching any sport on TV and go to high school football games every fall. And when my body screams for it I enjoy practicing yoga. I lived in Kenya for 10 years and still remember some Swahili and a lot of Kenyan Sign Language. My wife and three kids were all born in Kenya so I eat traditional Kenyan food all the time!
About Me
I got a bachelor degree in Psychology from University of California at Davis and studied several more years in Deaf Education at Gallaudet University and California State University at Northridge. After school I worked overseas in international development and disability projects addressing various needs like HIV and AIDS, inclusive education and refugee populations. I hope to return to school and study public health, diversity and inclusion or social work.
Experience
Currently I work as a case manager and addiction counselor with homeless deaf men in the residential treatment setting. I've taught briefly at the local school for the deaf and worked with local families who have a deaf child and want to learn ASL. I have also tutored college students in mathematics but ASL is my real passion and strength. As a deaf person I'm inspired by others who want to learn ASL whether a young student in school or a budding sign language interpreter.
Approach
ASL is a very popular language to study now and I applaud anyone who wants to join the experience. I'm excited about tutoring in American Sign Language (ASL) since I've had the pleasure to teach the language in the past. I am definitely a student-first tutor and willing to design a curriculum for any student without the classroom experience or adapt to the student who wants to successfully complete studies in the academic context. I'm flexible, open-minded and work at a natural pace.
