Fun Facts
Fun fact about is me is that my first language isn't English! I was born in Peru and moved to the US when I was 6 so my first language is Spanish. In fact for the longest time I thought pie meant foot (as pie in spanish is foot), so I always tell any students I tutor or teach to ask questions if they have them as I know how frustrating it can be to be confused.
About Me
I am rising Junior majoring in Biochemistry at maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">columbia-university">maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">Columbia University. I am currently following the pre-med track and hope to become a doctor once I graduate. Currently I work in a lab during synthetic biology research part-time and have been doing so since my Freshman year. I am a volunteer advocate for CVTC at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospitals and am a Health Educator for PHE (an organization that teaches students across New York various health topics, I in particular teach pregnancy prevention).
When I was in high school, I was a member of the National Honor Society and consequently tutored students at least weekly in Math. However outside of that, I was the go to tutor for a lot of my friends so I would often tutor after school and on weekends. Now that I am in college, I have not had much time to tutor unfortunately but I do teach Pregnancy Prevention every Friday (through an organization called PHE) in different public schools around New York City so I have in some capacity kept my teaching skills brushed up.
The best math teachers I have had have done something very special: they didn't just tell me what to do and give me formulas, they told me why I was doing what I was doing and what those formulas meant. This is the same approach I take to tutoring, I believe that Math is a beautiful subject! So for a student to understand math and be able to do well academically, it is important for a teacher to be willing to entertain questions and take an interest in a student's understanding. It is important to teach student how to figure out problems, no to just tell them how to do them.
