About American Indian College of the Assemblies
The American Indian College of the Assemblies of God (AIC), originally founded in 1957 as the American Indian Bible Institute, has played a crucial role in higher education for Native Americans within a Christian context. Nestled in Phoenix, Arizona, AIC has been known for integrating academic excellence with a commitment to serving the Native American community. It is strategically located in proximity to vibrant city centers and cultural landmarks, making it accessible and enriched by the surrounding metropolitan activities. Over the years, AIC has developed strong affiliations with the Assemblies of God, a significant Pentecostal denomination, which has multiple entities, including churches and mission organizations, that actively support and partner with the institution.
At AIC, the faculty, or tutors, are integral for nurturing both the academic and spiritual life of the student body. They are often involved in their related entities such as local Assemblies of God congregations and educational councils, becoming bridges between the college and the broader community. These connections enrich the educational experience with practical insights and opportunities for service. The college stands out for its personal attention to students, which is facilitated by its smaller size and favorable student-to-teacher ratio. This closely-knit educational community is not merely about imparting knowledge but is also focused on mentoring students for leadership and service.
Known for its tight-knit community and cultural emphasis, AIC boasts a diverse student body representative of various Native American tribes. Though small in number, typically enrolling fewer than 100 students, the college prides itself on its family atmosphere and its mascot, the Warriors, embodying the spirit of strength and resilience. While AIC may not have a wide array of prominent alumni like larger universities, its graduates have gone on to become influential leaders within their communities. As for academics, AIC has offered majors in Business, Christian Ministry, Elementary Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies, preparing students to serve both within the Assemblies of God and in broader societal roles. Although AIC has had to face significant challenges, including accreditation issues and financial hurdles culminating in the need to merge with another higher education institution, its legacy in the educational landscape remains influential, particularly among Native American educational initiatives.
