About Bard College
Bard College is a distinguished private liberal arts college known for its innovative curriculum and progressive ethos. Founded in 1860 by John Bard and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, the college stands in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, overlooking the scenic Hudson River, which situates it within the idyllic landscape of the Hudson Valley, not far from the vibrant cultural hub of New York City. Bard's academic rigor is reflected in its unique programs that include the Bard Prison Initiative, which extends high-quality liberal arts education to incarcerated men and women. The college is known for fostering interdisciplinary learning and public engagement while maintaining small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio that ensures individualized attention. Bard's campus is also home to the Hessel Museum of Art and the Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, emphasizing the institution's deep connection to the arts and culture.
Bard College also enjoys a network of satellite institutions and partners, collectively known as the Bard Network, extending the college's reach globally with entities like Bard College Berlin and Al-Quds Bard College in Jerusalem. Bard's faculty, exemplified by the highly regarded Levy Economics Institute, underscores the college’s dedication to groundbreaking research and intellectual discourse. Moreover, the Bard Conservatory of Music is among the prominent colleges within Bard, where students are required to pursue a double degree in music and another subject of their choice. Bard's commitment to pioneering education methods is also noticeable among its tutors, many of whom are well-respected professionals involved with projects that blend education with real-world applications.
Uniquely, Bard College’s mascot, the Rampant Griffin, embodies the spirit of the college's community—brave, curious, and thinking outside the traditional constraints of academia. Serving approximately 1,900 undergraduate students, Bard prepares its diverse student body for a world increasingly in need of critical thinking and innovative solutions. This small but vibrant community has produced numerous notable alumni, including award-winning journalists, celebrated authors, and influential artists. Among these are writers like Edie Meidav and Neil Gaiman, and musician and performance artist Amanda Palmer. In conjunction with its commitment to arts and sciences, Bard's reputation as a haven for intellectuals, social activists, and artists alike continues to thrive as it shapes the next generation of leaders and thinkers.
