About Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a nexus of academic and research enterprises, known for its cutting-edge work in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Established in 1861 by William Barton Rogers in Cambridge, Massachusetts, its prime location near the Charles River situates it within the Greater Boston area, a hub of intellectual and cultural activity. This proximity to other major entities, such as Harvard University, fosters a collaborative ecosystem known as the Greater Boston's "brain trust." MIT is structured across five schools: the School of Engineering; the School of Architecture and Planning; the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; the Sloan School of Management; and the School of Science, known for producing leaders and innovators who have significantly impacted the global landscape. Its research entities, like the Lincoln Laboratory and the MIT Media Lab, are regarded internationally for their contributions to technology and innovation.
Tutoring at MIT is an integral part of the academic experience, supported by a plethora of entities such as the MIT Teaching and Learning Laboratory, which provides resources for educational development. MIT's tutors and mentors are drawn from a diverse pool of scholars, including Nobel laureates, esteemed researchers, and industry experts, committed to nurturing the institution's approximately 11,500 students. The support structures for teaching and learning are designed to uphold MIT's ethos of 'mens et manus', or 'mind and hand', emphasizing practical application of knowledge. This philosophy drives the institution's success in producing alumni who excel in various fields: astronauts like Buzz Aldrin, economists such as Paul Krugman, and visionaries like Kofi Annan exemplify the caliber of individuals associated with MIT.
MIT's culture is as distinctive as its academic rigor, embodied by its beaver mascot—the nature's engineer—chosen for its industriousness. The vibrant community includes over 450 student organizations and a significant presence of fraternities, sororities, and independent living groups. Many MIT alumni have left indelible marks on the world, with names like I.M. Pei in architecture, Richard Feynman in physics, and Sal Khan, founder of the educational organization Khan Academy. The Institute continues to be a beacon of inspiration and progress, drawing students from around the globe who aspire to make a meaningful impact in various fields of endeavor. Their collective achievements not only add to MIT's illustrious reputation but also contribute significantly to addressing complex global challenges.
