About Reed College
Reed College, founded in 1908 in Portland, Oregon, stands as a beacon of liberal arts and sciences education in the Pacific Northwest. It was established by Simeon and Amanda Reed with the mission to provide a balanced education that includes a wide range of disciplines. The college is known for its high academic standards, its mandatory first-year Humanities program, and a senior thesis requirement that culminates in an original research or creative project. Nestled in the quiet Eastmoreland neighborhood, Reed's scenic 116-acre campus is snuggled between the bustling city life of downtown Portland and the serene landscapes of the Willamette River, providing students with both urban and natural environments to explore.
The faculty at Reed College, often referred to as "tutors" in acknowledgement of their intensive, personal engagement with students, are central to the college's unique academic experience. With a student-faculty ratio of around 9:1, the college fosters an environment where educators are not just teachers, but also mentors and research collaborators. Reed's academic rigor is mirrored in its variety of distinguished departments, some of which include the nationally recognized Biology and Physics departments. As part of the institution's commitment to intellectual inquiry, Reed hosts an annual event, the Reed Research Reactor, a nuclear reactor operated primarily by undergraduates—a testament to the hands-on learning experiences available to students.
Symbolized by the endearing mascot, the Griffin, Reed's tight-knit community is comprised of approximately 1,400 students who contribute to a vibrant campus life replete with traditions and intellectual vigor. Reed counts among its alumni notable figures such as Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gary Snyder, and former U.S. Senator Richard Lugar. The college also takes pride in esteemed resources like the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery and the Hauser Library as centers of scholarly and creative engagement. Reed's dedication to fostering a passionate and thoughtful community is reflected in every aspect of campus life, maintaining its standing as a premier institution for higher learning.
