About Xavier University
Xavier University, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a Jesuit, Catholic university deeply rooted in the liberal arts tradition. Founded in 1831 by Bishop Edward Fenwick, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. The university is known for its strong emphasis on ethics and service, as well as its commitment to forming students intellectually, morally, and spiritually. Frequently lauded for its academic rigor, it offers a variety of programs across its colleges, with the Williams College of Business and the College of Nursing being particularly prominent. Xavier's location positions it close to downtown Cincinnati, allowing for a beneficial partnership with various city entities and corporations, offering students ample internship and employment opportunities.
The university is represented by the mascot "D'Artagnan" the Musketeer, reflecting the martial spirit and determination that Xavier instills in its community. The university boasts a diverse student population, with approximately 7,000 students enrolled, including undergraduates and graduates. The sense of belonging and tight-knit community is reinforced through guidance by accomplished tutors and professors, who not only contribute to the university's various research entities but also provide invaluable mentorship to students. This dynamic academic environment has nurtured a host of successful alumni such as John A. Boehner, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and National Basketball Association coach, Tyrone Hill.
Being an integral part of Xavier's identity, the athletic tradition is equally rich. The Xavier Musketeers compete in NCAA Division I sports, and the men's basketball team is particularly celebrated, frequently making appearances in the NCAA tournament. The university's focus on cultivating well-rounded individuals is evident in its numerous service-learning programs and faith-based retreats. Facts such as these contribute to the university's overall profile as an institution that not only prioritizes academic excellence but fosters a sense of larger purpose and contribution to the community and society at large.
