Understanding Internet Security and Cyber Safety by Penny Brown

Understanding Internet Security and Cyber Safety

In today's interconnected world, internet security and cyber safety are essential for both individuals and businesses. With the increasing reliance on digital platforms, understanding the basics of protecting your online presence is crucial. One of the fundamental aspects of internet security is the importance of a strong password. A strong password acts as a first line of defense against unauthorized access to your accounts. It should be long, include a mix of letters (both uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and special characters. Avoid using easily guessable information such as birthdays, common words, or sequences like "12345."

Personal data refers to any information that can be used to identify you. This includes your name, address, phone number, email address, and even your IP address which is the address of your computer location. Protecting this data is critical as it can be used by cybercriminals or bad actors for identity theft, fraud, and other malicious activities.

Cyberbullying, a form of harassment that occurs online, is another serious issue that can affect individuals of all ages. It involves sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It's important to recognize and report cyberbullying to protect yourself and others.

Phishing (pronounced ‘fishing’) and malware are common cyber threats. Phishing involves fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by disguising as a trustworthy entity in electronic communications. Be wary of unexpected emails or messages that ask for personal information or direct you to click on suspicious links. Malware, short for malicious software, includes viruses, worms, trojans, and other harmful programs that can damage or disable computers and networks. Protect your devices by installing and regularly updating antivirus software and avoiding downloads from untrusted sources. We talk more about these topics and more in the Cyber Safety Club.

Your digital footprint is the trail of data you leave behind when you use the internet. This includes the websites you visit, emails you send, and information you submit online. Being mindful of your digital footprint is essential as it can be tracked and used by others for various purposes, including targeted advertising and cyberstalking. To manage your digital footprint, regularly review privacy settings on your social media accounts, think before you post, and be aware of the information you share online.

By understanding these basic concepts of internet security and cyber safety, you can better protect yourself and your business from online threats. Stay informed, be cautious, and take proactive steps to secure your digital presence. Take the following fun quiz to test what you learned!
